Pulling 3D models out of interactive PDFs

Oral-care brand

For an oral-care brand, we freed 3D product models trapped inside interactive PDFs that only opened properly in one desktop reader. A pipeline extracts each embedded model, converts it to a modern format, and packages it as a web 3D viewer anyone can open in a browser. The original PDFs stay untouched.

The gate

The source is never touched. Extraction reads the original PDF and writes everything elsewhere, so the document the client already circulated stays exactly as it was.

The challenge

3D product models were trapped inside PDFs that only opened properly in one desktop application, so most people who received them saw nothing.

Why it mattered

The brand had already invested in 3D models of its products. Locked in a format few people could open, that investment was invisible to the buyers and partners it was made for.

What we built

  • Extracted the embedded 3D model from each PDF.
  • Converted it into a modern interchange format.
  • Packaged it as a standalone interactive viewer that runs in any browser.

The result

  • 3D product models anyone can open and rotate in a browser.
  • A repeatable pipeline for the next interactive PDF.
  • The original documents exactly as they were.

Built for trust

The source is never touched. Extraction reads the original PDF and writes everything elsewhere, so the document the client already circulated stays exactly as it was.

Automation at work

Whenever a new interactive PDF arrives, the pipeline pulls the 3D model out, converts it and wraps it in a browser viewer, so buyers and partners can rotate the product the brand already paid to model.

What it produces

  • standalone web 3D viewers
  • models in a modern 3D format
  • original PDFs left untouched

How it works, day to day

A PDF goes in, the embedded model is read out and converted, and a viewer file comes out. The original is only read, never changed.

Where it saves time, and gets better with use

  • The next interactive PDF goes through the same pipeline, with no new setup.
  • Models the brand already owns reach everyone they were made for, not only people with one desktop reader.

The technology

  • Gets the 3D model out of a PDF
  • Turns it into something a browser can show
  • Leaves the original PDF untouched
Technical notes
  • Embedded 3D stream extraction from the PDF container
  • Conversion to a modern interchange format
  • Templated packaging into a standalone viewer document

Questions we get asked

Can you get a 3D model out of a PDF?
Yes. The pipeline pulls the embedded model out of the PDF, converts it to a modern 3D format and wraps it in a viewer that opens in any browser.
Does it change the original PDF?
No. The original is only read, never written, so it stays exactly as circulated.
